Performance support

Help at the moment of execution, rather than training beforehand

01 Definition

Performance support is help available during the work itself: a checklist, a short video, a decision tree or a visual work instruction, callable at the moment somebody needs it. The term job aid is often used as a synonym.

02 Why it matters

Not everything has to sit in somebody’s head. For operations that come round rarely or run to many steps, looking it up at the moment is more reliable than remembering a training from six months ago.

03 In practice

This is one of the cheapest ways to reduce errors, and at the same time the most often skipped. Organisations invest in a training day and nothing in the support afterwards, while the mistake usually gets made on a Tuesday morning during an operation somebody performs twice a year. A good rule of thumb: the rarer the task, the more it pays to support rather than to train.

05 Frequently asked questions
When do you choose support instead of training?
For tasks that come round rarely, run to many steps or change often, and where looking it up at the moment is practically possible. For tasks that have to happen fast and without hesitation, an emergency stop for instance, it does have to sit in the head.
Is this not simply documentation?
The difference sits in the design. Documentation is ordered by system and meant to be complete. Performance support is ordered by task and meant to give the right answer within a few seconds.
How do you make sure it gets found?
By putting it where the work is rather than in a portal. A QR code on the machine that opens the right instruction directly gets used; the same instruction three clicks deep in a document management system does not.
