Mobile learning

Learning on a phone or tablet, at the place where the work happens

01 Definition

Mobile learning is content designed for use on a mobile device: short units, thumb-operated, readable on a small screen and usable away from a fixed workplace. It is emphatically not the same as an existing course that happens to open on a phone.

02 Why it matters

A large share of the industrial workforce has no desk and no company laptop. For that group the phone is not an extra channel but the only channel.

03 In practice

Two practical matters decide whether it succeeds. First, connectivity: in a basement, a tank or at sea there is no network, so content has to work offline and synchronise later. Second, the device: many employees have no company phone, so it has to work on their own handset without an app store installation and without the employer reaching into their private data.

05 Frequently asked questions
Do employees have to install an app?
Preferably not. A progressive web app runs in the browser, works offline and can be added to the home screen, with no app store and no device management. That lowers the barrier considerably, certainly among contractors.
Can you ask employees to use their own phone?
Asking is fine; requiring it is more sensitive and needs an arrangement in any case. Make sure there is always an alternative, a shared tablet on site for instance, and that no private data from the device gets processed.
Does mobile learning work for complex subjects too?
For breaking things into small steps and for repetition, excellently. For subjects that demand overview and coherence, a larger screen or a guided session is better; mobile is then the maintenance, not the first transfer of knowledge.
