The amount of working memory that learning or working demands

01 Definition

Cognitive load theory holds that working memory can process only a limited number of elements at once. The load breaks down into the complexity of the material itself, the load the teaching material adds unnecessarily, and the effort that actually goes into learning. Only the middle category can be designed away.

02 Why it matters

Material that asks too much at once does not produce half a result but almost none. That explains why a complete, correct and exhaustive module often works worse than a shorter one covering less.

03 In practice

The classic mistake is a screen with an animation running, a voice talking, subtitles scrolling and text on screen, four channels fighting for the same attention. For operators, the real environment comes on top of that: noise, time pressure, gloves. Anyone making material for use on the floor has to assume less attention is available, not more.

Does this mean modules should be as short as possible?
Not shorter, but less at once. Complex material may take a long time, provided it is broken up and the superfluous is out. Short and overloaded is still overloaded.
Why is reading out what is on screen a problem?
Because reading and listening compete for the same processing space. Imagery with spoken explanation works; imagery with text plus that same text spoken works demonstrably less well.
Does this apply to experienced specialists too?
Less so, because they recognise patterns and process them as a single whole. Material built up well for beginners can feel slow and patronising to experienced people, so differentiating pays.
