Simulation

A recreated situation in which acting can be rehearsed without real consequences

01 Definition

A simulation recreates the behaviour of an installation, a process or a situation, so somebody can act and see the consequences of that action without risk. The form ranges from a software model of a process installation to a full VR environment or a physical rig.

02 Why it matters

It makes rehearsal possible for situations that are too dangerous, too expensive or too rare in reality. Those are exactly the situations in which mistakes turn out most costly.

03 In practice

The most important design question is how faithful the simulation has to be. Full physical fidelity is expensive and rarely necessary: what counts is whether the decisions are the same. An operator learning to recognise an alarm pattern and pick the right isolation sequence does not need a photorealistic installation for that. They need realistic information, realistic time pressure and realistic consequences.

05 Frequently asked questions
How realistic does a simulation have to be?
Realistic enough that the decisions hold, not necessarily that the imagery does. Excessive visual fidelity mostly raises the cost; what carries the learning is the right information at the right moment and a credible consequence.
What is the difference from a digital twin?
A digital twin is a virtual representation of an existing installation, often fed with live data and used for management and analysis. A simulation is aimed at practice and need not be tied to an existing installation or to live data.
Can a simulation replace physical practice?
Partly. For decision-making, procedural knowledge and teamwork, simulation comes close. For operations where force, feel or handling a tool counts, physical practice remains necessary. The combination works better than either on its own.
