01 Definition

Blended learning is an approach that combines digital learning activity with face-to-face or hands-on components. The aim is to use the strength of both: digital modules for knowledge transfer, comprehension checks and repetition; practice or simulation for skill development and behavioural rehearsal.

02 Why it matters

Pure e-learning is not enough for complex skill development. Purely classroom training is expensive and does not scale. Blended learning gives you the best of both: knowledge can be built asynchronously and at each person’s own pace, while costly trainer or simulator time goes to what can only happen face to face or hands on.

03 In practice

For an operator getting to know a new installation, blended learning runs like this: first a digital module on the process logic and the safety systems, then a VR simulation of the critical operations, then guided practice on the installation itself. Every step builds on the one before. Trainers no longer have to deliver basic knowledge transfer, and they spend that time on what genuinely requires hands-on work.

How do you decide what should be digital and what should be physical in a blended programme?
The rule of thumb: knowledge and understanding can go digital. Skills that require motor actions or situational recognition need practice or simulation. Digital modules build the foundation; VR, hands-on work or coaching build on top of it. A good instructional designer makes that call on the basis of learning objectives, audience and risk profile.
