01 How it works

A serious game puts the learner in a situation with a goal, constraints and consequences. Not "which step comes first?" as a multiple-choice question, but a shift handover where information is missing, the clock is running, and the choice you make shapes the next situation.

That difference matters didactically. Knowledge questions measure whether somebody knows the answer; a game shows what somebody does once the pressure builds and the information is incomplete, which is exactly when things go wrong in practice.

Because there is scoring and repetition, you also get data that goes beyond completion rates: where people hesitated, which step was skipped, which mistake came back across the whole shift.

02 When to use

Suitable

Procedures that keep going wrong despite training. Situations with time pressure or incomplete information. Subjects that need repetition where classroom delivery gets too expensive.

Not suitable

Pure knowledge transfer, where e-learning is faster and cheaper. One-off information. Subjects that will have changed again next quarter.

Serious games take more design than an e-learning module, and that is only worth it when the behaviour really is difficult. We say so when an ordinary module will do.
