Nel ASA is a Norwegian company producing hydrogen electrolysers at plant scale. Its M-series PEM electrolysers and alkaline systems are imposing installations, several metres tall and thousands of kilos heavy, built for industrial hydrogen production on large sites.
The problem: at European Hydrogen Week in Brussels, Nel wanted potential customers, investors and partners to experience its technology. Not as a brochure, not as an animation on a screen, but at scale, immersive and interactive. Transporting a physical electrolyser into a conference hall is obviously not an option.
Nel had under 8 weeks to build something that would fit the stand, demand no technical knowledge from visitors, and make the complexity of its technology approachable for a broad audience.
Core problems
- › Plant-scale electrolysers are physically impossible to transport to a conference
- › Visitors had to experience the technology at real scale, not as a 2D animation
- › A broad audience: technical and non-technical visitors served at the same time
- › Only 8 weeks of lead time until the live event in Brussels
- › Standalone operation required, with no IT infrastructure available on the stand
STARK combined 3D models drawn from Nel's product documentation with an interactive VR build-up that took visitors from nothing to plant scale in two minutes. The STARK 4D route:
01
Discover
Analysis of Nel's product documentation and the technical specifications of the M-series PEM and alkaline electrolysers. Decision taken: show both product lines side by side, with a selection menu for the visitor.
02
Design
Storyboard for a VR journey of roughly 3 minutes: choose the product line, move to a close-up of an individual unit, then scale up to a full M-5000 plant layout. Designed for intuitive use by someone who has never worn a headset.
03
Develop
3D models optimised for real-time rendering on Meta Quest 2. Interactive hotspots added for technical explanation. Spatial audio and environmental effects for maximum immersion inside a limited stand footprint.
04
Deploy
The application installed on two standalone Meta Quest 2 headsets. No wifi and no PC required. Nel staff could get a visitor going in 30 seconds, even without any VR experience of their own.
What came out of it was a VR product experience of roughly 3 minutes, letting visitors at European Hydrogen Week in Brussels take in the Nel electrolysers at real scale. A simple menu lets the visitor pick PEM or alkaline, and from there they step virtually into the plant.
The experience opens on a single electrolyser unit up close: visitors walk around it, tap hotspots for technical explanation, and feel the scale of the thing against a human body. The environment then grows into a full M-5000 plant layout, dozens of units side by side, at the size of an industrial complex.
Everything ran on standalone Meta Quest 2 headsets. No PC, no network, no complicated setup on the stand. Nel staff could get a visitor going in thirty seconds, without VR experience of their own.
What was delivered
- ✓ A VR product experience of roughly 3 min for PEM and alkaline electrolysers
- ✓ Real-scale rendering of both the individual unit and the M-5000 plant layout
- ✓ Interactive hotspots carrying technical product information
- ✓ Standalone on Meta Quest 2, no IT infrastructure required
- ✓ Ready to be run by Nel staff with no prior VR knowledge

What this means in practice
At European Hydrogen Week, Nel could offer a product experience no competitor with a traditional stand could match. Visitors stood literally alongside an M-5000 plant layout, which is physically impossible anywhere outside a production site. The VR experience turned into a conversation starter for the commercial and technical discussions on the stand.
