01 The challenge

Scalda is opening an immersive classroom at innovation hub KAAP in Vlissingen: a large projection space with spatial audio and interactive capability, developed together with HZ University of Applied Sciences and Dockwize as part of Energy Campus Zeeland.

The challenge: the opening ceremony draws a wide audience. Students, teachers, partners from the Zeeland energy sector, executives and politicians, all in the room on the same day. The immersive classroom has five minutes to prove itself: what can this mean for education, what is the energy transition in Zeeland, and why is this the future of learning?

A slide deck was never an option. Scalda wanted an experience that lets the space itself do the talking while telling the story of Zeeland as an energy region, to people whose backgrounds and technical knowledge vary enormously.

Core problems

  • A broad opening audience: students, teachers, partners and executives at once
  • The immersive classroom has to prove itself on its first public outing
  • The Zeeland energy transition made understandable for a non-technical audience
  • Only 5 minutes available in the opening programme
  • The technology has to take centre stage without becoming technical
02 Approach

STARK designed a five-scene structure that tells the Zeeland energy transition as a journey, from the present into the future, while showing what the immersive classroom can do. The STARK 4D route:

01

Discover

Co-creation with Scalda, HZ and Dockwize. Five scenes agreed: an introduction to energy in Zeeland, North Sea Port industry, blue hydrogen, offshore wind, and Zeeland in 2040. The narrative aims at pride and relevance for the region.

02

Design

A storyboard per scene: large-scale projection, spatial audio, interactive elements that bring the room to life. Designed for maximum impact on a first visit, including for people who have never set foot in an immersive classroom.

03

Develop

3D environments built from Zeeland location data: North Sea Port, the offshore wind farms, the blue hydrogen installations. Spatial audio designed around the projection geometry of the KAAP classroom.

04

Deploy

Optimised for the specific projection setup in the KAAP space. A run sheet for Scalda staff, so the experience can be reproduced across every opening activity.

03 The solution

What was delivered is a five-minute immersive opening experience that walks the audience through Zeeland as an energy region. Scene one shows the current Zeeland energy landscape from the air: port area, industry, wind farms. Scene two zooms in on North Sea Port, on the scale of industrial CO₂ emissions and the infrastructure the transition needs.

Blue hydrogen carries scene three: how CO₂ capture and hydrogen production come together in the Zeeland context. Scene four flies the audience over the offshore wind farms off the Zeeland coast. Closing scene five shows Zeeland in 2040, an energy region supplying clean energy to the Netherlands and Europe.

The experience uses the full projection capacity of the KAAP classroom together with spatial audio, so the audience sits inside the landscape rather than in front of a screen. Interactive moments let the Scalda team match the pace to the group in the room.

What was delivered

  • 5 scenes: from an introduction to energy in Zeeland to the 2040 outlook
  • Large-scale projection with spatial audio for the KAAP classroom
  • Interactive elements so the host can adjust the pace
  • A run sheet for Scalda staff, reproducible across every opening activity
  • Ready for the opening of Energy Campus Zeeland

What this means in practice

Scalda opens Energy Campus Zeeland with an experience that justifies the immersive classroom on the spot. Not a technical demonstration, but a story with substance about Zeeland as an energy region, told in a way no other medium allows. That sets the tone for everything the space produces afterwards.
