Instructional design for technical audiences

Engineers and operators are not a difficult audience. They are a specific audience, and most teaching material was made for a different one.

The misconception

There is a stubborn idea that technical staff are “hard to bring along” in learning programmes. That they do not like reading, have little patience, and see digital training as a waste of time.

That is not right. What is right is that most learning material was designed for an office environment and an office reader, and then released unchanged onto the work floor.

An engineer who ignores an eighty-page manual is not uninterested. They are making a sensible judgement about where their time delivers most. Make material that changes how that judgement comes out and they will use it.

Five starting points

Start at the problem, not at the theory. Office material builds up: context first, then theory, then application. Specialists work the other way round. Show the situation where it goes wrong and the explanation acquires meaning on its own. Anyone opening with three screens of background has lost the attention before it gets interesting.

Show it, do not describe it. An operation on screen is understood in seconds; the same operation in text takes a paragraph and leaves room for interpretation. That is not a concession to reading level, it fits spatial, procedural work.

Respect what they already know. Experienced operators see straight through material that treats them as beginners. Offer a route that allows skipping, or make modules short enough that skipping is unnecessary.

Be concrete about consequences. “This can be dangerous” does nothing. “Get this wrong and gas flows back into the measuring line, and you only notice at start-up” does something, because it is checkable and it is true.

Design for the conditions. Noise, gloves, poor light, time pressure, interruptions. Material that assumes a quiet quarter of an hour gets used in an environment that does not give that quarter of an hour.

The tone

This is where it goes wrong most often, and it is rarely the content.

Material written from compliance sounds like compliance: it must, it is mandatory, you are required to. What specialists hear in it is that this is not about them but about covering the organisation, and the conclusion is that ticking it off is enough.

Material written from the trade sounds different. It acknowledges that a procedure is sometimes awkward, names why it is there anyway, and assumes the reader is thinking along. That difference is not cosmetic: it decides whether somebody reports the exception or quietly works around it.

Practically: have a subject matter colleague read the text before production, not after. In half an hour they will pull out the sentences that do not work on the floor.

How to test it before it goes live

There is a test that costs little and prevents a lot.

Have three people from the audience work through the module while you watch and explain nothing. Do not pay attention to what they say, but to where they hesitate, scroll back or skip something. Afterwards ask one thing: what will you do differently tomorrow because of this?

If no concrete answer comes, the material is informative but not effective, and that is the moment to steer, while it is still cheap. We run this test as standard, and it pulls out things that looked fine on paper every time.
